MWC 2026: 6G & Satellite Internet Enter Cost-Reduction Scaling Phase

Recently, MWC Shanghai 2026 opened as scheduled. Unlike last year's enthusiastic atmosphere of 5G-A commercial orders landing intensively, this year's exhibition halls exuded a cautious pragmatism: the '6G Industry Ecosystem Zone' and 'Future Constellation' satellite zone, set up independently for the first time, were popular, but the industry was more keen to figure out 'when technology will turn into real money'.
Blue Whale Tech reporters found that in the 6G direction, three major paths—integrated sensing and communication, AI native, and space-air-ground integration—are now undisputed, with chipmakers even starting pre-research stocking early. In the satellite internet sector, the 'land grab' for orbital frequencies has largely ended, with large-scale networking and cost reduction becoming the new theme.
However, consensus stops at the technical level. Terminal manufacturers and investors generally wait on the sidelines: the former await killer apps, the latter can't calculate return cycles. Even international satellite players that have achieved profitability struggle with early cultivation of civil markets.
With the financial account of 5G investment not yet fully closed, 6G and satellite internet are collectively entering a transition period where 'vision is clear but delivery is hard'. Technical routes narrow, but commercial paths widen. Under realistic investment return constraints, the industry needs a more practical answer than 'grand narratives'.
6G Tech Paths Converge, Commercial Closure Still Being Explored
Entering the 6G Industry Ecosystem Exhibition Zone in Hall N3 at MWC Shanghai, five sections—Beijing 6G Lab Overall Area, Communication Enhancement, Integrated Sensing & Comm, Integrated Comm & Computing & Intelligence, and Space-Air-Ground Integration—clearly presented 6G's core tech visions. On-site staff said this is the first time MWC Shanghai has set up a standalone hall for 6G, sending a clear industry signal: 6G has moved from concept discussion to systematic verification.

'If last year everyone was still debating what 6G should do, this year the debate is about how to do it and what trade-offs to make,' said a technician at the Beijing 6G Lab overall area. Currently, the three enhancement paths—integrated sensing & comm, AI native, and space-air-ground integration—have largely reached industrial consensus. Key technologies like terahertz communication and intelligent metasurfaces have also entered prototype verification.
Upstream layout is clearly accelerating. At this exhibition, Qualcomm demonstrated an end-to-end 6G prototype system, GalaxySpace publicly displayed its self-developed second-generation direct-to-cell phased array antenna for the first time in the 6G zone, and vivo showcased its 6G pre-research prototypes and technology roadmap. It is understood that unlike Xiaomi focusing on underlying transmission algorithms and OPPO on communication paradigm innovation, vivo's display leans toward end-to-end system and application landing: its complete 6G test system covers MR terminals, 6G terminal prototype (UE), 6G base station (RAN), and core network, all linked.

The on-site representative of a domestic chipmaker said the company's internal 6G pre-research team has doubled in size compared to last year, with clear logic: 'Starting after the standard freezes is too late; we must make tech reserves in advance.'
However, compared to upstream enthusiasm, terminal manufacturers are relatively cautious. Blue Whale Tech reporters asked several phone brands about 6G terminal plans in the 6G zone, and most responses were 'closely monitoring', with few consumer product demos for 6G. A 6G pre-research director from a top-5 global phone maker said informally that it's still hard to produce a clear 6G phone commercial roadmap, not due to technical capability, but because the terminal side is still evaluating the conversion path from user needs to application scenarios. In his view, 5G's experience dividend has not yet been fully released, and 6G's envisioned immersive holography, multi-sensory scenarios are still a distance from mass consumer market.
Investment circles are equally cautious. An early-stage TMT investor who watched multiple demos in the 6G zone said the tech direction is impressive, but from an investment perspective, 5G's capital return is still being digested, and 6G's subsequent R&D and network deployment require huge investment, with exit cycles and return expectations currently lacking sufficient data support. He admitted that for now, he is keeping tracking and watching, waiting for clearer commercial signals.
'Future Constellation': Structure Set, Profit Path to Be Validated
Unlike the 6G zone's focus on key tech verification, the 'Future Constellation' satellite industry zone, set up for the first time, shows a different industrial rhythm: orbital structure has taken initial shape, and participants have entered a stage of fine-tuning resources and costs.
Domestic low-orbit broadband and narrowband constellation operators like Geespace, Guodian Gaoke, and Yuansat, together with international player Iridium, set up sizable booths. Geespace showcased real low-orbit satellite internet terminal equipment for scenarios like ocean vessels and desert mines. Guodian Gaoke focused on promoting Tianqi constellation's IoT applications. Yuansat engineers made live connections, demonstrating video call test footage via the 'Qianfan Constellation'.

'The scramble for orbital and frequency resources has largely ended. The key now is large-scale deployment and cost control,' said a Guodian Gaoke representative. The batch production cost of narrowband communication payloads continues to decline, but the user scale of satellite internet services has not yet reached break-even. For at least the next few years, government and industry orders remain the basic revenue support.
In the process of forming a profit model, terminal cost is a key link. Reporters exchanged with antenna and module vendors at their booths about satellite communication terminal material costs. Respondents generally said costs are falling rapidly and are now feasible for integration into mainstream phone designs, but most vendors did not disclose specific figures.
An Iridium booth business manager said Iridium achieves positive cash flow through narrowband voice and low-speed data services, but traditional markets are nearing saturation, so next growth must come from IoT and emergency communications. Domestic low-orbit broadband constellations are still in the scale-first catch-up phase, with break-even requiring time and user accumulation.
